Newport MUD public water system, (PWS) ID TX1010362, will be converting the disinfectant used in the distribution system to a chloramine from a free chlorine. The conversion will begin September 1, 2023.
You may experience taste and odor changes associated with this type of disinfectant conversion. These taste and odor changes are to be expected, the water meets and exceeds all state and federal drinking water standards and is safe to drink.
Public water systems are required to properly disinfect their water and maintain an adequate disinfectant residual in the distribution system. Chloramine, free chlorine combined with ammonia, is widely used as a disinfectant because it persists for long periods while also limiting the formation of disinfection by-product contaminants.
