Newport MUD Announces Election Results, Removes Capital Base Fee and Adjusts Waste Collection and Disposal Rate

November 20, 2020 5:37 am

The Board of Directors of Newport MUD is pleased to announce that Proposition A for the bond authorization passed by a 2-1 margin. Voter turnout was strong at over 75%. The measure passed by a vote of 3,134 to 1,540. The Board is grateful to the community for their engagement and feedback throughout the process.

As soon as the results were known, the Board called a special meeting for November 10, 2020, where the Board voted to remove the Capital Base Fee of $35.00 effective with the November billing cycle. Single -Family Residential accounts will no longer be charged the additional $35.00 Capital Base Fee.

Due to the rising costs of residential garbage services in Newport, the Board found it necessary to adjust the sewer bills to cover the costs of the twice weekly residential garbage service. $10.00 will be added to the minimum sewer bill on all Single-Family Residential homes to offset the cost of residential garbage service.

Newport MUD currently pays $14.69 for garbage collection for each home in Newport, and this amount is subject to annual increases. Newport MUD’s Waste Collection and Disposal rates to Single- Family Residential customers have not increased since January 2019. For many years, the District has been subsidizing each Single-Family Residential account for the twice weekly residential garbage service. Since January 2020, the District has subsided $336,146.39 for residential garbage services. By increasing the sewer rate the District will no longer be subsidizing the cost of the garbage service. This will allow the maintenance tax each homeowner pays to be used for maintenance projects within the District.

By removing the Capital Base fee of $35.00 and adding $10.00 to the waste collection and disposal fee, the Single- Family Residential minimum bill in Newport beginning December 2020 will be reduced from $97.00 a month to $72.00 a month. Should you require any additional information or have any questions, please contact the District’s billing office at 281-324-9803 and a Customer Service Representative will be happy to assist you.

Our board meetings are always open to the public, the time and location of the meetings are printed on your monthly bill and listed on the District’s Website www.newportmudtx.org.
